DK Tanking Questions

Ok. here are my questions

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/chogall/tidez/simple (my armory just incase any one wants to see it to better answer my questions)

1. My hp is 115k at 85 with that loot, gems, and enchants unbuffed. People have been ragging on me every now and then that my gear sucks or my HP is too low, or some stupid crap. Is my gear wrong, or is there anything that I can change to fix my HP?

2. Does any one know the best sockets and what not? I've been going for Dodge and parry (and i hear you can get parry through str, so I enchanted that on my gaunts.) am I wrong?
well your hp at 115k is a bit low for heroic tanks for dks but I would really consider trying to get a replacement for that weapon there is a nice quest one from deepholm if I recall.
Make sure you look at rep vendors, there is a lot of nice gear on them even just for honoured. If I'm in my tank gear check the items for the rep ones.

Should really be gemming and enchanting for as much stamina as you can and make sure you use at least the Cata green gems, they shouldn't be expensive. Perfect Solid Zephyrites are ideal being +53 Stam and a lot of JC get them from their daily and aren't useful for it. Use Mastery/Stam for meta and if you want to match a yellow.

It looks like your weapon has no runeforge on it get Stoneskin Gargoyle on it.
115k HP is low for a tank for Heroics. DPS normally have 100-115k. Make sure you're gemming for stamina or stamina hybrid gems. Make sure you have your weapons with Stoneskin on it.

Use Tank gear and trinket, not DPS.
I assume that the weapon you have equiped is new because it is not enchanted. If these are dungeons and they are complaining that you are "squishy" it might be more of a CD popping problem. I have about 12 tanking CDs (with engineering for 1 or 2). Use them whenever possible on trash and time them correctly for the most effectiveness on bosses. Don't worry about them being down on trash pulls; they will be back in a minute or 2.

Unholy Dps on PTR?

Hey guys...ive been working on leveling my DK to dps at 85 as unholy and looking at some of the PTR patch notes im a little worried, so can anyone whos playing on the PTR tell me if your dps has gone down by much or is it pretty marginal?
I haven't tested in a current content raid setting, but on a tank n spank fight (i.e. Argaloth) you can expect a 500-1k dps increase.

With the changes to mastery and the way it interacts with Scourge Strike and our diseases/DnD, the 'nerfs' to our strength and strike damage were offset completely.

Adding the new Runic Corruption uptime buff, the damage that our actual 'toon' puts out has been increased by a noticeable amount.

I say 'toon' because the main nerfs were to our ghoul. Our ghoul was 30-40% of our dps that was able to completely ignore most raid mechanics, which was our main advantage over other dps classes.

So in short: our personal damage capabilities have gone up, but we are now more affected by fight mechanics, bringing us more in line with other specs and classes, which is completely reasonable and I think blizz did a great job re-balancing Unholy as a dps spec.
Alright awsome :) ive always loved unholy so im glad.

Mastery for Unholy - Not to shabby

Ran a couple of 5 mil dmg + parses on the test dummies.

First was my normal forge with crit > mastery.

2nd parse was reforging all crit to mastery (saving haste reforges).

Noticed more dps.

My gear is already flooded with Mastery due to going unholy from DW frost. This patch however did upgrade my current mastery filled gear.

Sorry for lack of SS's btw.

oranges.
why would u have ever reforged to crit in unholy...
Maybe I misread that, but it seems that he did not reforge to crit, but from it.
Mastery was horrible with blightcaller.

I am not looking at my gear right now, however If a piece had Mastery and Haste on it, i would of forged the mastery to crit.

I left the pieces with Crit/Haste alone unless of course I needed hit.

After reforging, took anything that had Crit and turned it to mastery (if it has haste on it already)
why did you reforge the mastery on your weapon rather than expertise?
i reforged the expertise

Armory will not show that since I did not do that till after a bit of UI fussing.

DKs and Warglaives Confirmation

This is my first post on the forums. I'm an avid reader, but have never truly found a need to create a thread or post my opinion, that is until now, I have been reading rumors all over the forums and on random fansites concerning Death Knights using the Warglaives of Azzinoth. Nowhere however have I been able to find actual confirmation of this from Blizzard. If this is an actual change could someone please toss a link the the blue post on forums regarding it and give information on when this change will go live. I know if confirmation can be found there will be many very excited Death Knights everywhere, thanks.
no blue posts, but there are supposed ss's of the tooltip from beta. They were changed to swords and dk's were added to the classes that can use them. Do a search in the old forums for warglavies.
Yeah, I searched for em and found alot of info about it, but nothing that was official. It was just a bunch of warriors and rogues saying it'll never happen and others saying it will. :(

Any information yall have about DKs using the glaives would be useful.
Confirmed. Rejoice!

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/8978/captureum.png
I don't see how that is a confirmation. Could easily be done on a private server or just overall faked. Not that I'm saying it is or isn't just saying its not very good proof.
Thanks Kraylis.

Odd Paladins weren't added as well... HAHAHAHAHA
Awesome! Time to start farming on my DK :D
This matters because?....

Because, even though they're old items, there is still something romantic about having the Warglaives.

They can still equip 1H Swords though, so they'd at least be eligible for 1. :P
You don't have to do anything. If they are there they are there. Doesn't matter either way.

Awesome-sauce. Time to get 5 locks at the second to last boss for farming.
After looking into this further I'm still not sure Death Knights can use them, a Blue post on this subject is nonexistent and needs to surface soon. If it doesn't we're gonna have a lot of DKs sitting around with Glaives they can't use.

If it's in the beta then I don't see what other proof you need. It would be pretty redundant of them to make the change to allow a class to use it only to change it back for a live release.
sweeet

Not to necro a thread..but necro away!

Nah, felt like seeing if any fellow DKs have gotten one or both of the warglaives and didn't feel like it deserved a new thread.

DK tanking avoidance

Hi Guys,

I'm curious about DK tanking avoidance, Right now my blood spec have about 20% avoidance, having played a warrior tank for a long time I feel this is very low.

I know that the core mechanics of blood is the self heals and the blood shield, but what is the ideal avoidance for a DK tank?

Thanks

Onewingangel Jubei'Thos
In WotLK I was at around 38% or something, I don't quite remember. With Horn of Winter I'm at 23% now, it'll go up as better gear comes. It's just part of the re-gearing up.
Yeah I thinking it should be around 40% or so at least, because my 80 prot war had about 70% avoidance including block in JP gear. Any 85 prot war or bears can share their avoidance so that we can get a broad view on how avoidance is in cata?
oh yeah forgot prot pallies as well =P
From what I've seen the other classes have roughly the same amount. I have 25% in 349 average item level but that's mostly because it's all being reforged into other stats.
So at this stage of cata avoidance stats doesn't play a major role in tanking gear any more? And it seems that Blizz is focusing all the stats on gear to mastery... Any raiding tanks that can provide some of their thoughts on this? Are you taking more damage then you would like or it works out better then just having pure avoidance stats on gear?
The ideal avoidance is where you reforge it all into Mastery.
I think my avoidance is like ~20-22% dodge/parry. Remember whatever you had prior to the expansion takes a dive into the toilet when DR's kick in, and DRs are brutal this time around.

But yeah, Mastery hooooooooooooooooooo.

Spec Questions...

I'm about to respec, and I was wondering about 2 specs. I love Dual Weild, I just don't have the hit for it at the moment, but! what is this I hear about DW Unholy? And secondly, what is a really great PvP spec?
Let me get this straight. You have enough hit for 2h, but not dual wield?
Yeah, I still have like an 8% chance to miss when using DW.
You don't go for total hit cap when dual wielding. You go only high enough to make sure your specials hit. In Wrath that was 5% hit. I can only imagine it is the same now.

DW Unholy is currently higher DPS for raid content according to EJ, but I bet it will get nerfed before long. Blizz has stated that DW will only be viable in the Frost tree so don't hold your breath for DW Unholy staying.

As for PvP, I run blood for survivability. However, I rarely PvP so I am not one to actually give advice on that.

Requesting Critique, Please!

Hey all. I'm looking for a review of my gear, and possibly playstyle/priority of how I play. I'm one my guild's main tanks, so I'm always looking to stay sharp, especially since we're just now accruing enough geared players to enter raids.

Per another thread in this forum, it had occurred to me that I wasn't keeping Frost Fever up on bosses, so that's a noob error I'll correct. Considering that, this is my priority/rotation on a boss:

[START ROTATION: Outbreak > Blood Boil > Heart Strike (to raise Blade Barrier)] > Death Strike > wait for one Blood Rune to come up > Rune Strike dump (forcing U/F rune procs) > Re-apply Frost Fever as necessary, refreshing Blade Barrier, yada yada.

As far as my gear goes, I've been told that Mastery is a priority over avoidance, so my gear has been altered accordingly. I hear conflicting reports about gemming Stam vs Mastery, considering that DKs are presently being hit much harder than any other tank class/spec. I'd like specific feedback on that, if possible.

Other than that, an overall opinion of where I can improve my gear, any tips or tricks, whatever you can say that'll make me more effective would be greatly appreciated! After that, please do highjack this thread as a "rate the above DK" thread, as I'd love to see what others are doing, specifically tanks where possible.

All the best,

Gaff
WHY WILL NO ONE LOVE ME

How important is mastery to blood now?

with the new blood shield how important is mastery to DK tanks now?
same as always.

edit: because i know someone will pipe up... There's a certain level of gear where theoretically we'd be stacking up to 100% shields constantly. when that happens mastery will be devalued. until then, nothing's changed.
I've always considered it pretty important but then again I don't do heroic 25mans. (yet?)

The on-demand mitigation is amazing, it stacks now so you can be a little less picky about waiting until your shield pops before putting another on (if you're raid-tanking then it's not really an issue at most times anyways, but still), and it's more fun in my opinion.

There is no reason to cookie cutter yourself quite yet since both avoidance and mastery are viable (and arguably close in effectiveness) ways to build a DK Tank even still.

I just wish I didn't need to Lichborne heal. I don't "like" it. It feels off.
I don't use lichborne and do fine.
thx for the speedy answers...on another note is it still advisable for deseaseless tanking with the new changes?
if we can get by with out then virulence is pretty worthless.

(does any1 remember what the old crimson scourge talent read?)
use outbreak.

there's really no where else to put points but virulence.

Personally, since we have 2 constant raiding dk's. I will be reapplying scarlet fever via BP once every minute by BT + PS to get a free one. Outbreak should be up to reapply again. Frost Fever will be taken care of by the DPS.

thx again :)

Beginner Frost Death Knight.

Hello everyone, I'm a new player to WoW started about 2 months ago, or about the time that Cataclysm was realeased. I have a few questions about Frost Death Knights.

I have another alt, he is a level 41 enhancement shaman. I leveled him, because my real life friend recommended for me to play a shaman. And I have a level 60 DK atm. I was wondering which is more viable in PvP? I find them both equally fun, so that will be the deal breaker for me.
What sucks about my frost DK atm is, I run into a battle and I die like quick, cause no self heals ;(

DK Tanking Gear Advice

Hello all! After a recent 6 month hiatus, I have decided to dust off my little death knight and get back to playing. After a month or so, I've gotten him to 80 and put some nice gear on him. However, after getting bored of constant 15k crits, I've decided I want to play a tank. The problem I have however, is I have absolutely zero tank gear. I can buy some wyrmcrest accord rep blues, put on my Ironsoul and start tanking that way, or keep using my current gear which has higher stamina but zero dodge/parry. Can someone tell me how or where I should start gearing up my tank and good places to go?

Thanks in advance!

Also, any advice on glyphs, spec, reforging, gear stat priority would be greatly appreciated!

PS. Please no "cataclysm out in 10 days" I am aware of this

Queue as DPS and spend your JPs on 251 Tier gear and work your way down the vendors (Frost Emblem vendor > Triumph > Conquest etc). That is, if you really must do it. You'll be much better served simply saving JPs for 85 (sorry, had to).
At this stage in the expansion, I'd say forget it. Anything you get will be replaced instantly in a little more than a week.
I know you want to get involved in tanking, but I have to agree that anything you get now will be replaced once level 85 becomes available. And, yeah, that does make any Justice Point purchases at level 80 a waste.

EDIT: I just looked at the items you have.... you could probably get away with tanking heroics just with that, so long as you have the right spec and a 2-hander to use.
i'm in the same boat i have t9 tanking and dps gear i am just waiting til cata for new tanking and dps gear its not worth the time to queue as dps. you may want to spend your time farming gold and buying flight mastery for the extra 30% mounted speed.
I just turned 80 on this dk, though leveled as tank. It's near impossible trying to justify waiting a week while I'm rolling around in 1.8kgs. The hardest part for me, and this is readily apparent for all the other classes, is trying to differentiate the good info for starting gear, versus theorycrafting for those with nice gear and their corresponding tactics. I'll just keep on-a-readin...

It's simple really.

Since the only way to Tank something is to make sure you're hitting it, prioritize gear with +Hit and +Expertise on it (up until you're 8%/26 respectively). Since Blood Shield is a significant source of damage mitigation (your second job - not die from the boss hitting you), this places even more of an emphasis on Hit/Expertise gear.

Outside of that, you should know that currently, Healers have infinite mana. Therefore, Avoidance takes a back seat to flat mitigation (Armor). If you're looking at a piece of gear and it has more Armor on it than the current piece, and you're Hit/Expertise capped, you'll generally want it. If significant Armor is lost for a gain in Avoidance, it's probably best to keep that for an off-set.

After that it's just making sure you maintain these caps and keep your Mastery and Armor up, and that's all there is.

Certain fights favor certain gear sets. Since you asked for simple advice (if I'm reading correctly), I'll let you find that on your own later on.

172 is the expertise soft cap now, it still has a value past that point but is largely diminished.

This.

In 10 days you can get full T10, all the extra gear from the vendors and be back at JP cap for 85.

Should frost dks duel wield?

I have a frost Death knight with a 5.4gs hes an alt don't really play him but I would like to know if I should duel wield or use a 2h? I would like a lot of opinions.
http://elitistjerks.com/f72/t105701-frost_dps_cataclysm_larger_than_life/#Generalized_Spec

How many opinions? So many opinions!
Either is fine if setup right(see the above link for that info)

Dw unholy will work @ 85 although blizz doesn't want it to(and will probably break it in the future).

Dw blood is bad even though it's still supported by runeforges

DW win's by 10% so if you want to be serious play DW if you want to have fun and be inferior just for the sake of liking a 2h wep go 2H.

DW UH wins over DW Frost and 2H UH by 5% and beats 2H frost by 15%
So now you have the numbers how you want to play and how competitive you want to be will make your final decision.

New to death knights, Question.

I'm making a tanking death knight and my current rotation as is follows.

icy touch>plauge strike>Blood boil>>pestilence>D&D>then random heart striking and rune strikes.

I'm guessing my rotation is way off what is too be used, could someone gear me in the right direction?

Thank you.
Start with DnD>BB for Scarlet fever and then spam HS and use DS to get death runes. Also Rune Strike is on the GCD now so it can't be macro'd to your skills. I Usually tab HS and RS every target at least once since RS is crazy threat and is now available to us all the time.

Diseases are close to useless right now for tanking (at least in 5 mans) since Dps will never give you the chance to apply them and they deal insanely low damage better off using the runes on another DS.
In all honesty I have found, for me at least, that diseaseless tanking does more tps than using diseases, and yes that means single target too, though Im not sure if that is because of my gear or not.

For groups of adds I usually start with 2 BB then blood tap, heart strikes tab target rune strikes, (death strikes when needed for healing)

If the group has more than 3 adds I start with D&D

For single target Ill start with Heart Strike and BB (for the debuff) watch my health for death strike use throughout the fight) Blood Tap for more heart strikes and runic power dump with RS.

This usually keeps mobs on me quite well, and single target when the boss is on me no one will pass my threat

Diseases, at least for me, will be applied for me more often once we get Outbreak

But again like I said I dont know how dependent diseaseless tanking is on good gear

EDIT: DRW I save as a defensive cooldown or if a dps is getting near me in threat
The only time I use full diseases is in massive AoE situations where my Crimson Scourge actually earns its keep, and I use both diseases on bosses when I have Dancing Rune Weapon up for the extra dps of double-stacking my diseases. The DRW's diseases don't do anywhere close to 50% of the damage of my normal ones, more like 75% or better, probably a scaling thing.

Icebound Fortitude used to get out of stuns?

I am wondering when this is going to happen cause as a death knight i am finding myself getting stun-locked and thinking oh my IBF would make me immune to it for the duration! :D
but sadly i end up getting killed by chain stuns. when are we gonna get the ability to use that move to get us out of stuns?
I"ve been saying it for awhile. Warriors can break them and so can Paladins. For whatever reason we have to have RP (Unless we are blood) and predict ahead of time that a rogue is going to come up behind us. If we pop it early its clearly visible that we popped it and it has a long CD. People just wait it out and then stun us. Its almost a useless non blood skill now.

Rate my DK!

^^ how am I doing so far? this is my main toon, first 80
To be honest, it's very hard to rate someone as they are leveling due to gear inconsistencies, leveling talent builds etc.

New DK needs help!

So, I just rolled my first DK. I am completely lost though, as to how to go about which spec to do, what stats to get....

I quest and dungeon a lot... Which would be the best tree to go into? What is each trees role and their main focuses? Pros and cons?

And, what stats do I look for? I've never deealt with a melee classes outside of rogues, and a rogue and DKare very different.

Any other pointers? Rotation? Things to avoid?
If you look at the specilization screen it tells you what each tree's role is. There's some stuff on EJ you can read for both tanking and DPS.
As for questing, frost is generally the best tree to go with. Unholy focuses a lot on diseases which is not very good for leveling because diseases are actually a fairly small amount of your dps, you have to waste 2 GCDs putting them up (before you get outbreak at 81 that is), and you will generally kill a mob before they have their full effect. Elitist jerks says that 2H frost is the best for questing although personally I find Dual Wield frost is more fun. You have to make the choice yourself, although you'll want to make the choice before you spec., as they take a few different talents.

If you like to do dungeons, I recommend dual spec. into blood and tank so your wait on the dungeon finder will be much lower.

Stats are strength and stamina. Other stats depend on your spec.

As the poster before me stated, a lot of good information can be found in the forums at elitstjerks.com
I was Frost in PVE... dps it's great... but Tank is so much fun.
Now i run BLOOD in PVE... it's so much fun.

search for help in old topics... it helps me a lot all the time
everything u need to know is alread in forums, somewhere :D
For leveling: 2H frost is the best due to KM, HB, and no need to manage a pet.

Stats-wise: Try to stay at the hit cap for your level, but don't kill yourself over it until the end game. You'll wanna go strength, mastery (once it's available), haste and crit (not as important due to killing machine). EJ has the stat weights for each spec, so I won't relist them here.

AVOID: Having some weird mix of pure tank and dps gear. Pure tank is any plate that has parry, dodge and, to a lesser extent, mastery as the piece's only secondary stat. Do not use caster plate (yes, there are DK's that pick those up ==).

Other pointers: Just play. Read EJ on what an end-game DK looks like. Not too much I can tell you without writing a huge wall of text; and the best way to learn is to play your toon to get the basics down.

Talent build after new patch

Looks like I'm going to lost a couple of abilities/talents in order to maximize my effectiveness, this is what I'm looking at so far...

2h frost pvp expertise?

Title says it, what's the expertise cap for 2h frost pvp. I know everyone says haste, haste, haste and more haste, but at what point to you want expertise? The reason I ask is because I'm duking it out with a feral druid yesterday and he dodged all my attacks just about. If I didn't have a resto shaman show up and heal me I was dead for sure.
No DK spec uses expertise in pvp. Avoid it like the plague and reforge it off your pvp shoulders.
Alright thanks for the info and I will definitely do that...I just wanted some clarification and I got it.
Feral played by anyone with an IQ over 86 counters dks in 1v1 right now, don't worry about it.

Next patch changes everything. Get the death strike glyph, go immune to snares after the second hit (coi, ps, DS to heal a bit, you're snare immune) will change the game and feral is getting nerfed too.
Cool, that helps out a lot, and again thanks again for the positive info, it is much appreciated.
Well, EJ says Expertise until capped is more DPS than haste (of course). This is all in the abstract, but don't forget either that PvP'ers are even more loathe of the occaisonal miss than the PvE crowd.

The thing is that this loathing of "MISS" is mostly related to "key abilities", like stuns and silences, that generally have long cd's. For DK's, they're all spells - Strangulate, Mind Freeze, Hungering Cold, etc. Expertise doesn't help spells. Hit cap and Spell pen are the only stats that help.

That, and the two types of miss that expertise helps, dodge and parry, vary quite widely among the player classes. Not every class parries. Certain classes (like Feral Druids in the OP) have dodge talents. NE's have a dodge racial. So any helpful amount of expertise will hit a soft cap quite early, and after that, you should by no means ever add a stat that's only helpful against some classes/races.

That said, even mages will dodge you. There is an innate dodge chance for any target of equal level (I think it's 5%, but I'm not sure). I don't see any reason not to gear for that soft cap over another stat like crit or mastery. It helps against all classes, and gives you more damage point for point than crit.

But sadly, that NE kitty is always going to dodge quite a lot.

It CostsHow Much to Fly?

The steed in Ebon hold costs 900+ and it says it takes a skill of 225 to ride. The new flight trainer in SW says I need the level 60???? riding for 225 and then the level 70 for 4500 to get skill 225? Before all this I was supposed to be able to buy riding and the neat steed for less than 2000 total and qualify now. What gives? A little help please.
If all the information on http://www.wowpedia.org/Riding is accurate then as a new death Knight without rep bonuses you would have to spend the following:

304gp for 225 Riding skill (minimum for flying) - 150% flying speed/100% ground speed
50gp for a standard gryphon mount
---------
354gp minimum to fly in Outland.

+500gp for Cold Weather Flying to fly in Northrend.
+250gp for the Flight Master's License to fly in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor (Cata. Dec 7).
---------
1104gp total to fly in all flyable areas of the game at 150%.

+5000gp for Artisan Riding to fly at 280% speed.
+5000gp for Master Riding to fly at 310% speed.
---------
11104gp total to fly in all flyable areas of the game at 310%.

+850gp difference in price to get the DK gryphon mount instead.
---------
11954gp total

You can also do the achievement "What a long, strange trip it's been" to get Master Riding instead of buying it. I do not know if you would still have to buy Artisan Riding or not.
On Southwest Airlines, it costs nothing if you're a bag.
LOL^
When I open the new flight trainer in SW it indicates I have two levels of training the top being Jorneyman and my next level I need to pay for is 150 skill Expert for 225 gold. So I don't have the 150 skill that is stated at the site you mention. Something is wrong or at least different from what it was before.
So you are getting a faction discount instead of having to pay the default 250gp for Expert (225 riding skill).

The original 304gp i tallied included Apprentice, Journeyman, and Expert skill costs without any rep discounts. I overlooked the fact that you would already have Apprentice and Journeyman riding given to you for free since you got your 100% land mount and the skills to ride it through your initial quests. That brings the total down 54gp overall and then your rep discounts are going to reduce the overall costs even more as shown on the chart at http://www.wowpedia.org/Riding.

There are 5 levels of flying right now. 75. 150. 225. 300. 375. You currently have 150. The next level is the first level of flying skill, 225. I'm not sure how this is hard to grasp.

Edit: You absolutely do have 150, you get it for free as a DK.
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/lethon/barsoom/achievement#92:a889

Shows you have journeyman riding, as it should, as you get it when you enter the game as a DK.
I wish I could do a screenshot of the menu of the flight trainer at SW. I am looking at it right now. There are 4 things on the menu. The only one that is available to me to buy is expert level 150 for 225 gold. If I already have a 150 skill level as everyone keeps saying why the heck do I have to buy it? Then there are two other future choices for skill level 225 one is called cold weather flying for 450 gold avalable at level 68 and another available at level 70 also called skill level 225 for 4500 gold. After that is Master level. All the hell I want to do is fly the steed at Ebon Hold that says it takes a 225 skill level. So I am going to make the assumption that I have to buy the expert 150 for 225 gold being offered to fly at all, then get the opportunity to buy the cold weather skill level of 225 for 450 gold when I get to level 68. That is the only thing that makes sense to me looking at this damn menu.
I always remembered the ebon hold chickenmount as scaling with whatever flight speed/skill you have...

Cold weather is not 225. 225 is flying. You have the achievement for 150 riding. Take a screenshot and post it.
Now that all mounts scale with riding skill, the bone gryphon is no longer unique at all. So why does it still cost an arm and a leg? Why should I have to pay so much gold just so I won't look retarded flying around on a hideously ugly lion/scorpion/bat?

Pssst...

{looks around to make sure noone else is listening}

I hear there's a free flying mount available from a Caverns of Time heroic instance...

There's also rumors of a free flying mount from a faction reputation item reward...

And there's supposedly a rare creature that flies around Northrende that if you kill it, it becomes a mount...

Keep it to yourself though...

Just thought you should know what people are saying...

You didn't hear it from me though...
The end of my story: There is a misprint in the menu for purchasing expert flying. Even though it states you would be getting 150 which was causing all my confusion I bought it anyway. To my amazment I got 225 skill!!!! I then went and got the mount in Ebon Hold I wanted and all is fine. I had put in a ticket and a GM did get back to me and confirmed it was a error that was going to be fixed.

What is more important?

Parry rating or dodge rating on a Blood tanking DK?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Dodge: mitigates 100% incoming melee damage.
Parry: mitigates 100% incoming melee damage and sets auto-attack timer to zero.
Mastery, is more important than both.
Parries reduce your current swing timer by 40% (bosses with parry haste enabled do the same when they parry you). From what I've heard, parry and dodge have similar DRs now, so you would ideally want them to be balanced to get the maximum avoidance.

Mastery is far superior to either, though.

Frost 2h or DW for 80-85?

Hey all I'm really loving the DK again since about a year ago when I played him heavily. I'm now leveling him for tanking at 85 and maybe some PvP but nothing too hardcore.

I was just wondering I am Frost and Blood specs. I can get weapons for both specs if needed it's not a problem. I was wondering the optimal Frost spec. Wondering if it is Duel Wield or TwoHander.

Thank you very much,
Vanche
Doesn't matter. Just make sure you get OaPH.
the majority of people who play frost usually go for the DW, but either is fine
supposedly DW is higher in dps, but not enough to make too much of a difference. go with whichever you enjoy the most.
OP,

Take a look at EJ, there is a few posts in the frost dps section that you will find interesting about leveling as frost.

I am on a pve server and leveled as 2h frost. On pvp I would have done dw as there is more burst dmg for pvp situations.

The 2h frost has the upper hand for leveling though if not on or not caring that your on a pvp server. The reason for this is the faster generation of RP along with RP Mastery that you don't take as dw. When you mix this with lichborne, you have a handy way to heal yourself to keep moving in the leveling grind.

But either way is fine, go with what you like. just make sure to get pale horse and the dg talent in the unholy tree as it will make it faster leveling by pulling mobs to you from further away.

2h.

I leveled on a full pop pvp server no problem with 2h frost.

The reasons for 2h over dw are that

A) easier to get weapon upgrades, str based 1hers are very rare. You get guranteed blue quest reward 2hers in deepholme and twilight highlands.

B) less talent points.

C) presence. you should be leveling in unholy presence for run speed and haste already, 2h frost does ideal dps in unholy presence too, while dw does best dps in frost presence. Since you're already in unholy presence, might as well use the spec that gets the most out of it.

Above all, make sure you have pale horse and unholy command talented. Those are the most important leveling talents, easy to have at lvl 80 as 2h frost.

Did I miss any talent points??

Hey everyone. Just a quick question:

Just started a new DK. I made it to level 58, finished the death knight starting area, and just headed into outlands. I was soon plagued by the thought (while looking at my talents), "What if I missed a quest somewhere and left without all of my talent points?!"

Is this possible. Is it possible to miss a quest and then find yourself gimped at 85 because you are missing a talent point? Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

By the way, as of 4.0, I have 25 talent points spent at level 58. Does that sound right?

how much is too much mastery

for blood i've been stacking mastery and currently at 109% absorb shield. should i stop at 100% and just focus on other avoidance stats?
Until the patch you can't have to much.
berry nice, hai five
Even with the patch mastery is still going to be good. not much is going to change really.

Frost or Unholy

I am going to level my DK to 85 this week and i know Blood is best for that but the question i have is what spec is best for

1. PVP Overall
2. Burst Dmg
3. CC

Any info is great! thanks so much!
1. blood
2. unholy
3. frost

frost dks are doing good now for dps
pvp overall is not blood
Blood might be fun in BGs but overall its not really the got to pvp spec... come to think of it at 85 i only think ive seen one or two blood specd pvp DKs.
Unholy is your overall PvP go-to spec.
Blood is for vs. Melees or when you're feeling defensive.

I haven't had much time with Frost yet.

Dark Simulacrum

Any of you other raiders still taking up bar space with this useless ability?
PvP spell - I use it about twice an arena for free heals/insta cast spells. I love it!

Did DKs get Nerfed or Buffed (PvP)?

Just wondering where DKs stand right now in PvP? I was thinking of rolling one to try something new and wanted a plate DPS class.

From reading the patchnotes it looks like they got nerfed but, a lot of people in game are saying they got buffed. So if thats the case how were they buffed?

we are the best melee class in pvp even after the hotfixes
He lies. Fury Warrior is the way to go. Crit after crit after goddamn crit! Oh hey, 30k Raging Blow on a 3k resil'd target, easy-peezy-lemon-squeezy!
We are doing great, I made a rogue cry today
Fury's are awesome though.
What spec is most people using for PvP?
Unholy is the best all around pvp spec.

Frost is arena viable (just not as much as Unholy) and amazing in BGs.

Blood has a niche as a flag carrier and solo-node defender.
Frost for bursting, Unholy for being @!*!ing annoying.
Unholy was buffed, despite the hotfixes. The mastery change and Death's Advance are gggg

You are so dillusional Unholy is NOT the best PVP spec. Frost is hands down. And judgeing by the portrait of your toon, I don't think you could do too much PVP, your toon looks a little too "chubby" to be running around fighting. Looks like a stroke waiting to happen.

You'll go nowhere in PvP with that mindset, btw.
I dont like to arena all that much, maybe some 2s here or there just messin around with a pally buddy. But for the most part Id just be interested in BGs / RBGs. Would you guys say Frost is better in that case?

Dk's lost even more Armor Rating...why??

Well 4.0.1 patch goes live and I lost effectively 2k armor rating unbuffed. Patch 4.0.3 goes live and you can toss on another 6000 Armor Rating lost with absolutely no explanation or warning as to changes that could cause it. Can i get some clarity here please??
I would liked to know as well. I lost close to 4k armor and can not find any sweeping changes in tank gear itemization or talent re-works in the patch notes. A few other tanking friends said they have noticed the same thing with their armor as well, so I don't think it's an issue that is native to just DKs.
Lower armor then warriors, lower health then druids... what are dk's special tanking stat again?
Lower armor then warriors, lower health then druids... what are dk's special tanking stat again?

No, not true.

And this isn't news, it has been this way for a while now. Not to mention, armor values were nerfed across the board, it's just not DKs.
Lower armor then warriors, lower health then druids... what are dk's special tanking stat again?

Wrong.
Our special tanking stat is our Mastery, which compensates for more damage than Block and Savage Defense without even counting the heal from Death Strike, and is the only one that compensates in any way for magical damage.
Boss burst damage is supposed to be getting nerfed along with these ratings, the fact rating are overinflated now and the ease with which healers could keep a tank at full heath is what caused icc to be what it is in the 1st place.

Less boss burst = less need for such high mitigation. When your getting 3 shot by cata bosses and yourself and the healer can't react, then it's a problem.
I'm pretty sure it's just a bug. Blood presence is only taking me from 20.7 -> 26.5k armor. It seems to be only adding 30% extra armor instead of the 60% stated on the tooltip.
so wait wait... now we dont have a shield we dont have higher health we have LESS ARMOR than a warrior/pally... wtf.
confirmed, 6k armor loss
It's a bug. ffs read the other 5 threads about it on the front page.
It's not in patch notes, it wasn't data mined, and the tooltips haven't changed.

It's 99% likely to be a bug, as there is no reason for the change.
apparently there's a blue post stating that it is intentional. hotfixes for today: http://blue.mmo-champion.com/topic/136974/patch-403a-hotfixes

oh and deathstrike nerfs on top of it too.
Our special tanking stat is our Mastery, which compensates for more damage than Block and Savage Defense without even counting the heal from Death Strike, and is the only one that compensates in any way for magical damage.

You mean the blood shield that only absorbs physical damage?
so yea just thinking back to the beginning of wrath when i first started tanking on my dk in blues. i seem to recall having the exact same armor i now have in full heroic t10 gear. so glad i can see my armor has progressed through the tiers of raiding...
I was wondering why LK was 2 shotting me last night, GG blizz, always nerfing to the extreme
Awesome. Apparently I'm supposed to start taking 5% more physical damage. Thanks Blizz.
Awesome. Apparently I'm supposed to start taking 5% more physical damage. Thanks Blizz.

it's more than 5%
armor changes are usually much bigger than the tooltip would suggest. it says 5% but the end result is another 10-15% damage from w/e it is that's hitting you.

Death Knight with 'Retribution Aura'..?

For a few days now since I got started with my Death knight I started to notice a consistant trend.. My death knight at te top of the screen shows to have the pally's 'Retriution aura', at first I just laughed it off.. 'A holy death knight lmao'.. Thought maybe some kind of glitch, talk to ppl in my guild and that's what they said, but next day it's still there. I'm concerned though cause I don't want Blizz to notice that and think I'm hacking; cause first of all I'm not smart or skilled enough to hack second, IF I was going to hack for an ability it would be the pally's aura that gives him the defense boost lol. Anyone else exspirance this ever..? Or know what it could be....? I don't mind it, not an issue as long as it don't put my account or toon in danger of being deleted. So far my DK is my favorite toon, probably end up as my main. Thanks in advance for any input you might have/ offer.
You questing in EPL? My mage had Ret aura for a while after doing the caravan quests, thanks to the paladin NPC's that follow you around.

If not, I compare this to being attacked by a Dwarf from the Cape of Stranglethorn while in Zul'Gurub or falling to my death under water a few quests into Vashj'ir. Strange bugs that need to be squished.

Lol... reminds me of my mage, went to blink down some stairs in hyjal somewhere and I didn't blink down the stairs I kind of blinked THROUGH them and fell through the ground to my death...
I DID do that quest wit the blood elf pally, dwarf pally and that female Worgan names 'Floria' or something like that. Thought for a while it might be that pally's Ret Aura that was somehow lingering on me... Do these bugs normally last a few days though?
Just wierd lol.

Want to Honor farm

So my favorite thing about playing this game is the pvp. I desperately need pvp gear and as far as I can tell, the first step is to farm honor to get Bloodthirsty gladiator's. Since this is the first character that I will have reached the level cap with, I feel that I need some information in regards to getting where I want to go.

My plans are to do either random or specific battlegrounds as blood (I've tried the other specs and blood is my favorite, so unless honor happens to come much faster in another spec I'm staying with blood) to farm honor which brings me to my first question:

Which battleground will give me the most honor per hour?

I want to get the blue pvp gear and then to start arena as unholy. So I would also like to know how I should enchant, reforge, and gem for pvp.

I heard the pvp hit cap is 5%, but what about all the other things? expertise? Stat priorities?

Like I said, I want to farm honor as blood and then switch to unholy for conquest points. So when answering these questions, please keep in mind my final goal, Unholy arena and possibly some organized battlegrounds much later.
go random, even if you lose you get some honor.

yes melee cap is 5%.

when you go unholy, reforge to haste.
reach hit cap first, then start stacking haste.
Well, the problem you face as Horde is the long queues. Most of the people in the guild I'm in are like you - BG'ers who love to Honor grind, and do Arenas on the side. It may be more prudent for you to go alliance, and then go back to horde after you got your gear if you don't like the Alliance, and you have $50 to spend on two-way transfers.

It's always better to queue random BGs, since the queue pops faster (for both factions, and you get honor for winning/losing), but to answer your main question, Alterac Valley and Tol Barad will give you the most honor/hour if you're a killing machine and constantly in the midst of battle. If you were to hypothetically find a way to win every time and have insta-queues (like Alliance does), you could play ~6-8 rounds of SotA or EotS in an hour or so

Like you, I am a Blood DK that solely PvPs, and I can tell you that I usually end up in the top-50% of the honor-point capped. If I am the one capping flags, then it's the lower part of the top-50%, but if I'm the one distracting flag-carriers and taking on zergs, then it's the top 3 spots).
1. Queue for random BGs, specific ones if it is the holiday weekend.
2. Do TB every 2 hours, gives a lot of honor, especially if you are attacking and win (1800 honor if you win on offense)
3. Wintergrasp if you want, purely optional.
4. Weekly quests for Wintergrasp / Tol Barad. Each WG quest gives 16-24 honor and the TB weekly gives 64.
5. Find a PuG doing a rated battleground and get your weekly conquest points. Will be easier to get conquest doing RBG than doing arena (with no PvP gear, of course)

I've been doing all this on my main:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/sargeras/narathzul/advanced
and you can see how much honor I've got from it. I didn't even have 100 honor when I hit level 85.

Good luck on the grind, I only have 3 pieces of honor left, 5500 honor worth, and I have 600. Going to be a good grind, in the last leg of it myself :).

THEN it is onto all the Heirlooms. Ugh.

Also, enjoy your Honor gear when you get it, I'm at 3100 resil right now and I'm loving it.
Personally if you plan on switching to UH I would really suggest playing it in BG's or you will just suck at it in Arena. In my xp I couldn't play Fury(when I played warrior s7-8) in BG's then expect to play Arms well. In Arena DK's get tunneled alot now and you will have to get used to being very kill able and how to counter act that.

I basically just do randoms and call to arms.
So what are the stat priorities for blood pvp and unholy pvp? And how is my current spec for pvp? what glyphs should I use?
So pvp Hit cap is still 5%? Is there a magic number for hit rating that gets you there? im at 538 and i still have a .52% chance miss against a lvl 85. But i assume that is a non-player stat? Seems like a hell of a lot of hit rating.

I guess my question is, for only pvp what does your HIT RATING need to be?
personally I don't know, but I'm sure someone here knows. Besides, why does it matter? Just keep raising it until you have 5% hit/0% chance to miss against 85
because i believe for pve and pvp its different. Like you have a certain percentage you can miss on an NPC, but versus another player that percentage is lower? IDK, been awhile since i thought about it :)
It's cuz for npc's you will be fighting ones higher level than yourself and bosses... on the other hand, for players, well... you're not going to meet a level 86 for a while
Hit cap is 4% for PvP. Anything more is overkill and not needed.

Anti-magic stealth nerf?

Maybe I'm just still reeling from the previous nerfs we've gotten over the past few days, but did Anti-magic shield get a stealth nerf recently?
Has the tooltip always said "to a maximum of 50% of the death knights health"? I could have sworn that not even a month ago I could tank nay instant kill magic abilities with it and be fine, abilities that should have done 50% of my health easily in one or two ticks.

Please tell me I'm wrong. I really can't stand to see us nerfed any further.
That was implemented in 3.1.0.
Thanks,
Don't know why I didn't catch that sooner, but I'm relieved either way.

highest dps for heroics/raids

Unholy or Frost? I know DW frost is better then 2h as far as dps but does unholy edge out/do as well as frost further on?
I think EJ posted it as DW Frost > 2H Unholy = DW Unholy > 2H Frost?

I would check, but I'm lazy.
Without EJ, I would assume Cathal's statement is pretty accurate. Dual wield UH might be higher than 2h UH though. Crazy unholy, never know what to expect. We'll be using obliterate soon if they nerf DW >.<
Unless it's changed in the last couple of days, EJ stated DW Unholy > 2H Unholy = DW Frost > 2h Frost.

DW Unholy is 5% greater than 2H unholy, 2H unholy and DW frost are withing 1% of each other and 2H frost is 10% behind DW frost.

This is inaccurate.

For the EJ post, i checked it up and here it is:

[Normal Raids]
Assuming an average iLvl of 359 (normal t11), the order goes something like: 2H Unholy > DW Frost = DW Unholy > 2H Frost, with 2H Unholy being ~1.5% ahead, DW Frost and DW Unholy being within 0.5% of one another, and 2H Frost being ~10% behind the middle. For reference's sake, the approximate dps at this gear level is 19k-20k.

[Hardmode Raids]
Assuming an average iLvl of 372 (hardmode t11), the order goes something like: DW Unholy > DW Frost = 2H Unholy > 2H Frost, with DW Unholy being ~2% ahead, DW Frost and 2H Unholy being within 0.5% of one another, and 2H Frost being ~10% behind the middle. For reference's sake, the approximate dps at this gear level is 21k-23k.

2h Unholy should be pulling better numbers with the priority "rotations"

Once you have heroic gear, DW Unholy pulls ahead slightly, but 2h Unholy and DW frost are basically the same, frost gets ahead by a bit.

2h frost... well you suck, and it's time to switch out of leveling spec.

^Dumbed down version
DW frost > all imo.
what the last 2 posters said. only DW frost scales for all gear lvls, 2h unholy starts best, dw unholy ends best but in between dw frost is only slightly behind both and stays competitive/at the top from bad gear to max gear, im sticking with dw frost as im beating warlocks at 85 with it (dunno who's top heroic dps right now but only locks have come close to me at this time).
I agree with the dual frost arguments as well.... plus dps aside dont have to micromanage that stupid pet in and out of aoes and crap which makes it even better.... I will gladly give up ~2% for not having to deal with the pet...plus if the pet dies what does that do to unholy's dps? cooldowns to resummon, lost any buffs, if it dies again maybe another cooldown and such
okay let me tell u all right now what the castly superior dps spec as a DK is...
its unholy...
why? the ghoul is simply overpowered in abom from

lesson! how to keep your ghoul in abom form for the majority of the time:

take the minor glyph, Deaths embrace i beleive its called, where u are refunded 20RP everytime u cast deathcoil to heal. b4 a boss pull, make sure u farmed up RP to heal your pet to 5stacks and be rdy to transform

during the fight, throw heals at your ghoul to build stacks

the ghouls damage is more important than offensivly throwing deathcoils constantly, given u should still be launching deathcoils offensivly like a madman, use it intelligently when u need that pet
Maybe, but having to depend on a pet to top charts is stupid imo, because without that pet you're pretty much useless.
With DW frost, you don't need a ghoul to help you out since you're the one whose putting out that omgwtfsrzbsnz damage.
dont let it die, with huddle and deathcoils its not that hard.
also if it does die u can immediatly summon it back(unless its died twice)
But with managing a ghoul, and making sure it doesn't die, takes away time that you could be using to curb-stomp mobs.

In my opinion, I'd much rather give all my focus to the NPC instead of having to check on my ghoul to see if it needs heals or if it's died.

But that's just me.
well thats your opinion but it doesnt change the fact that if used properly UH>frost by alot

atleast with the current gear were wearing, it may scale differently in the future. but right now no spec compares to UH
Agree to disagree my friend.
it is my assumption that dw unholy will be nerfed some time in the near future given the history of unholy +dw it's just a matter of time. If u look at the primary dw classes warrior rogue shaman and dks most of them have a talent or ability that allows them to hit with both weapons. Raging Blow Stormstrike Mutilate and Threat of thassarian . Tot is not able to be supported by dw unholy. Like i said given the history of dw unholy you all rember woltk naxx era, it would appear that its not in the design philosophy for unholy. I my self am stick with dw frost Ive always been frost 2h in naxx dw after uld and i like it's playstyle . I don't like to micro manage every little thing to do my dps i do enough of that on my shaman.
#showtooltip death coil
/cast [mod:alt,@pet][mod:shift,@player][] death coil

Death and Decay

Am I the only one who thinks it's ridiculous that this ability outdamages Scourge Strike even on a single target?
you know, in the DW UH build your supposed to glyph DnD and throw it down in priority of DnD>SS

i cant get used to it though, seems awkward fitting a 30sec CD Drop cast AoE on my single targets and the difference isnt noticable in terms of DPS so i glyphed SS instead
*DnD is used in the single target rotation of both 2H and DW builds, due to its hidden 11th tick, as a replacement for SS whenever one can.

Quoted from Elitist Jerks.
And I have tested this, it is a DPS increase. It is odd, but I got used to it pretty fast.
I don't know though, it is odd, but somewhat nice.
I think it's a bit fail on Blizz's part that an AoE replaces a spec's signature single-target strike in a single-target rotation, yes.

UH PvP spec...need thoughts...

http://www.wowhead.com/talent#jbhMbZZcucbffu0Rh

Been considering a re-spec due to the huge amount of snares & slows that DK's are susceptible to. I purposefully didn't use the gargoyle or improved haste (more of a personal choice: I hardly, if ever, use the gargoyle in a BG setting & my haste is fine as it is without an extra 2%). Thoughts/criticism?
My spec was working out pretty well in BG's yesterday

I haven't played Unholy since the start of WotLK and I was top five in damage for four games straight.
Lichborne & EW would take away too many points from the UH tree, but I have thought about AMZ (never specced for it before). Suppose it would be nice combined with CoI...

I've heard arguments against EW but Lichborne is pretty much a given

A free WotF plus the ability to self-heal with it? Worth the points to me

Lichborne is a MUST if you PvP in any competitive environments (Arena/Rated BG).

Endless Winter I can live without (very meticulous with my resources, 20 RP WILL be there when I need it).

AMZ is another easily underrated sort of thing. Sure, you can live without it. But when you learn to use it, you've opened up a very very useful tool; don't scoff at 30k spell damage absorbed in an environment full of mages. Oft times an early AMZ is your only late game defense against a Deep Freeze, and will be enough to put you over.

Post your UI!

yeh .. i like to keep my screen overall clean of those number spams .. i just leave them on the top left, and the incoming dmg/attacks is 2-3 with quick fade on the bottom of my character.

the bar in the bottom is eepanels2 (or any similar addon that create those "artbox") .. its a simple 1680x50 rectangle with another 1-2px line on top of it (just to look pretty lol).

artboxes under unitframes / behind action bars = eepanels2

map = simple minimap
that optmized combat log below the minimap = eavesdrop
omen = threat bars
omnicc = cooldown timers on icons
magic runes = runes
sct = combat log
blood shield = blood shield tracker
art of the icons = buttonfacade caith

85 2s and 3s...comp?

Mage or Boomkin or resto druid....

Frost 2h or Frost DW at 85?

As stated above what is the best for PVE and PVP Frost 2h or DW? Other suggestions for different specs are welcome :D
pve is def DW frost and from alot of ppl over at arenajunkies.com most prefer DW frost as well as 2H frost so you cant go wrong either way
in my opinion, dual wield is the way to go for both of them. frost 2h just does'nt feel right to me, and i've done both for pvp, but only dual for PvE.

So what will be better?

With the new patch out, i was wondering if the blood UH supspec is better than the frost subspec. Ready, set, go!

Suggestion: Icy Touch change

I play frost 2H. That being said, in many encounters my 31 point talent, Howling Blast, is completely useless to me. I'll use Lich King as an example. If I use HB in phase 1, I'll pull aggro on the ghouls, which the offtank is trying to gather as they spawn with whatever minimal taunts and talents he has available. So during the entire first phase I'll be using Icy Touch instead on Rime procs. Two things are wrong with this. One, IT hits for about 8k crits, vs. 20k HB. Two, IT burns Killing Machine procs, HB does not. This combines into a fairly significant dps decrease. It's been repeatedly beaten into our heads in Beta via articles, blogs and testing that threat is going to be an issue in Cata - and many tanks are having significant issues with AOE threat in current content - which means I might as well just ignore HB and get used to using IT for most encounters. There's a simple solution to this: Buff IT. Put some kind of IT buff in the same talent as HB so that the other DK specs aren't affected, and remove it from KM procs. This levels the playing field with regard to single target vs. multi target DPS abilities and doesn't change anything in pvp. If the future of PVE dps is single target, we need to be empowered to do so.
That's sorta an isolated occurrence and I personally think that problem will largely be solved in the cata instances since there won't be much mt/ot interplay and groups will be pulled farther away from CCed mobs.

Your example is pretty much a statistical outlier and IMO isn't representative of what will be the norm in Cataclysm. It's a situation where you pretty much do whatever you have to to survive because straight DPS without situational modifications would be bad.
Keep both on your action bar use icy touch first so the tank can build aggro then let howling blast rip, also with glyph of howling blast and chillbanes, it makes it really useful for aoe CC, something where really going to need in cata dungeons.
I understand the KM reasoning: HB auto-critting a group of mobs - or more likely a group of players in pvp - is OP. This is why HB is no longer on the KM list of abilities. However since IT is so low of a dps move, I would rather use KM procs on *ANYTHING* else. To the point where I'd ignore a Rime proc and wait for runes\RP to regen so I could get a OB\FS crit. Let's take it a step further. Rime is a 3 point talent - to get free IT occasionally? If there were other DPS talents, I'd reallocate the points elsewhere. If HB is relegated to single target fights.... what's the point of the ability being AOE? I suppose this isn't horribly broken, but I bet more of you will be agreeing with me in Cata. Right now we run in and pull aggro on all 50 whelps in front of Sindy\all mobs in front of Lady DW\huge packs in front of Marrow and let the AOE fly. This ain't gonna work any more. Single target skull. Get used to it.

@ Mightylink: If I don't give the tank 100k head start in threat, I WILL pull off of him. How long do you think it takes to build 100k threat on 3 mobs? 4? Not going to stand around for 5 minutes per pull to start hammering the HB button.
I agree superb. Why make a class spec so largly AOE when that's just going to cause them to have to cut back or never use one of their best abilities? Here's the other thing though, tanks should be able to hold aggro enough in cata, that we won't be pulling off. Crit is nerfed like crazy, (at least chance to crit) and dps with howling blast will be much less then now im comparison because its not a weapon strike. With most new tanks doing weapon damage or having high threat abilities, there is a chance we will be fine using HB as normal.
People act like this is the first time AoE abilities have been incorporated into a single target rotation. Whirlwind, Div Storm, Living Bomb.
People act like this is the first time AoE abilities have been incorporated into a single target rotation. Whirlwind, Div Storm, Living Bomb.

And this situation still exists, oh wait no Whirlwind and Div Storm specifically had their damage reduced to not be included in the single target rotation. Not sure about Living Bomb.

AoE abilites are not supposed to be in the single target rotation anymore, HB is because Frost went untouched in Beta. IT is a massive loss in dps if used in place of HB.

But its not like we have been beating this horse for 6 months to no avail, it'll hopefully get dealt with in 4.1.
I feel sorry for warriors, they're in the same boat. Bladestorm = dead warrior. All classes with AoE as a core ability are going to have issues. My suggestion only applies to frost, however. Let the warriors figure it out on their own ;-)

@Kage: incorrect. Mastery will be on more items and is a very good secondary stat for frost DK and strength is scaling very high on items. HB will hit like a cannon, and IT will hit like a squirt gun.

Tanks can't hold aggro now when I HB, this isn't going to change.

LB is still very much part of the single target setup. It's a 31 point talent, just like HB. Div Storm and WW are not. My point, aside from your little tirade, is that people managed those abilities in CC situations before. It's not that serious, especially when you're essentially talking about trash damage.
Icy Touch should have been removed a long time ago from KM, but doesn't need to do HB levels of damage.

Landslide Enchant instead of Razorice for DW?

Landslide Enchant: Permanently enchant a weapon to sometimes increase attack power by 1000 for 12 sec when striking in melee.

I am not huge with math, so i have no idea how big of a dps increase Razorice is, but is there any chance that landslide could be a better option for DW Frost. So it would be MH Landslide, OH Fallen Crusader, or is Razorice much better than Landslide?
Where is landslide from? I've never seen it.
razorice is still better. Its a flat % increase on HB, FF ticks and FS .. thats not to be taken lightly.
Landslide's an incoming cata enchant.
I'm not going to bother doing any calculations but I'm going to say it's not worth it. If it happens to be better, RI will definitely outscale it. 1000 AP will never be more than 1000 AP.
I think generally a % number tends to scale better than a flat number, as people have said.

Of course, though, the graphics of our runeforge enchants are severely lacking.

The Landslide animation isn't very appealing either; at least not IMO.

Hurricane looks OK, but it's too bad the effect is only at the base of the weapon. Hurricane might actually be fairly useful for DKs too--450 haste for 12 seconds could potentially help with rune regen quite a bit.

Avalanche would look fine were it not for the snowflakes; the frost aura is cool though. This one might be fairly useful for DW DKs, but I dunno--probably loses some of its worth since we prefer slow/slow.

Power Torrent, IMO, is by far the best looking enchant in terms of graphic effect. Unfortunately it's completely useless to DKs.

In any case, our many Runeforges could certainly use a graphics update, if not also a mechanic redesign. Fallen Crusader is good, but the graphics suck. Razorice and Cinderglacier are decent for Frost specs, and the graphics aren't too shabby either. SSG graphics are terrible.

Lichbane graphics aren't bad, but the mechanics are completely useless. Nerubian Carapace graphics suck, and the mechanic is now obsolete. The other parry/disarm and spell reflect/silence ones aren't terrible mechanics, but in comparison to our other runeforges they just aren't up to par.

I'm disappointed there's really no runeforge (or two) made for Unholy spec like there are for Frost spec. I think DKs should definitely get some kind of +haste runeforge considering how haste now helps with rune regeneration. I also think we should get a runeforge like Razorice or Cinderglacier but made for Shadow damage for Unholy spec.

Given that ap is gone from gear and the scaling we will get on str to compensate, i wouldn't be complaining about RoFC. As for landslide, I doubt its uptime will make it anywhere close to our runeforges.
I wasn't complaining about FC's mechanic. I was complaining about the graphics of it. And the part you quoted wasn't even about FC.

Fallen Crusader is good, but the graphics suck.

Blood DKs not as fun as before

Does anyone else think blood DKs aren't as fun to play as before?
putting aside balance and stats issues. I got back on my DK today and played around with him
he used to be blood before 4.0 so I decided to try the new blood spec

It sucked,
Balance and stats issue aside, there just wasn't any "fun" in play a class that I used to love
I'll have to try the other trees for who knows maybe DK tanking just isn't for me, but I have yet to find another class/spec that is just outright boring to play

I'm used to Pally prot tank both before and after the 4.0 patch and I love what they did to it, so I doubt it's the role I dislike

Any comments?
Deleted by Tkdpunkk
Paladin tanking received a wonderful tune in 4.0. The spec is now more dynamic than any other tanking spec.

You're right. Blood tanking just doesn't have the "fun" factor, in terms of playstyle, that say Frost or Unholy has while DPS'ing. But, it's much more entertaining to tank as a DK than as a Druid or Warrior currently (imo).

Cataclysm is going to make the tanking role a little more dynamic, with threat, positioning, and the need to survive being more emphasized, so perhaps that'll add a little more spice to things.

P.S. Have you tried Blood since the 4.0.3a patch? Once BP added the 20% rune regen and Rune Strike got fixed, it definitely bumped up the fun factor compared to 4.0.1.
yeah it aint fun as before. i miss it being able to do actual damage. i dont agree with it being the dedicated death knight tank. i'd rather have frost be the dk tank since it was originally known to suppress damage and did a great job on aoe threat (howling blast). But personally i'd rather have blood as a dps than be a dedicated tank.

Blood had been the best tanking spec for meaningful content since at least Ulduar anyway.
my question was not about who was the strongest or the best but rather about the "fun factor" involved in playing a spec

Arcane mages for example do great dps, but its a boring as hell spec cause it's a 1 button spec till 80 then it's a 1 button spec burn pop evocation then conserve mana untill it pops again and 1 button burn away
I'm kinda opposite, but I never played DK prior to the 4.0 patches. I started my DK like 2 weeks ago, got her to 60 as Frost and but her on the backburner until I knew what I was gonna do for cataclysm (worgen reroll possibly).. Anyway, long story short, I love my female space goat, she's teh sx.

I tried blood spec (snagged dual spec when I got her flying mount), specced blood, and I am never looking back!! I must admit, I'm still getting used to the rotation and stuff so I don't waste runes on the wrong abilities and lock out ones I need for blood, but still.. I have yet to die as blood spec, and I've solod every quest/group quest except for the instances in outland and the 5 man group quests, and I'm loving every minute of it.

Right now the issue I'm having is which tank to tank with.. Guess I need to get my warrior and DK to 85 and decide then.
Frost was always the most fun DK spec for me but I loved blood too, but this whole BS idea of Diseaseless tanking makes my threat rotation exactly 4 buttons: Death Strike Heart Strike, Rune Strike and Blood Boil.

As opposed to the old rotation where you used: Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Heart Strike and Death Strike (because Rune Strike was off the GCD and macro'd to each of these abilities).

There was nothing really interesting about the rotation beforehand, it just now substitutes two different buttons (Rune Strike + Blood Boil) for the old ones (Icy Touch + Plague Strike). You also do use diseases whenever Outbreak is up (oh look a 5th button for your threat rotation, one more than before) at 85.

So you're saying that I should try to dual wield tank as bloodspec? I haven't seen anything that pushes me towards this in the talents or abilities, if you can explain this to me incase I missed anything?

Dual Spec. Not dual wield. You do not dual wield as a tank. Ever.

Blood had been the best tanking spec for meaningful content since at least Ulduar anyway.

Wrong, I tanked frost since I hit 80. Frost was more fun, had better mitigation and better threat.
While you may have tanked in frost since you hit 80 that still doesn't mean frost was the best tank spec. Frost was never at any point the best tank spec for dks except maybe at some point in beta wrath. For end game progression tanking since ulduar blood has been the king of dk tank builds. The math and the progression both back that fact up.

Blood had been the best tanking spec for meaningful content since at least Ulduar anyway.

Wrong, I tanked frost since I hit 80. Frost was more fun, had better mitigation and better threat.

One of those points is opinion, and two others are not true. Frost didn't have any more mitigation than Blood did. It had more avoidance. The threat thing is a non issue, threat was incredibly easy to hold.

It's fine that you tanked frost, but it doesn't change the fact that Blood was the preferred spec to use for tanking.

Blood had been the best tanking spec for meaningful content since at least Ulduar anyway.

He said meaningful content. I don't see a whole lot of meaningful progression amongst your achievements.

Dual spec.. Yeah, I went off on a tangnet there, sorry about that.
DKs haven't been fun to play since beta but I'm still playing mine because I enjoy the class

FCS vs stoneskin for tanking?

currently stoneskin gargoyle gives me about 1k hp and 1% physical damage reduction whereas FCS heals me for somewhere around 4500 every time it procs (dunno what it's PPM is but it seems to go off a lot) and adds strength for more threat/parry.

so my question is is the constant healing+strength from FCS better than stoneskin?
The healing isn't noticed that easily. If you did the math, 1% more physical reduction is pretty serious business, and your health will fly up soon to where you're getting considerably more than 1k health.

No DK's should have threat issues at the moment, either.
It's also worth noting that RoSG has a good bit of synergy with talents.
right off the bat, as your gear gets better the staight % of armor and stam get better get better, so there is (however small) some threat gain form the bonus armor combined with Bladed Armor.
the best "tanky" part of FC is the small bit of parry you'll get from the STR, nad the armor mitigation is a bit more reliable.
Also because of the % stam, the more stam/buffs you build, the more potential there is for Vengeance and for death strike heals/blood shield as each, at some point, are limited by your health.
combined with mastery the healing and shielding from the extra stam will likely out-weigh what you get from FC and you don't need to rely on a proc.
Edit:
Forgot to mention, Our self heals are % based on our health, so the % from RoSG increases overall self healing as well.

Mastery, Hit, Haste Caps, etc.

Trying to maximize my utility in dungeons and future raids. Was wondering what all of the caps were for each of the pertinent DK stats like hit, crit, haste and mastery. Ty for help!
hit and exp -> read your char sheet, they're right there, nothing else can be capped with current gear, try again in 4.2

2h frost pvp - spell pen?

In all blue gem slots? And if so, why? Thanks.
130+ spell pen. 4 gems/cloak enchant. Don't ask why, just do it.
If spell pen is the same as it was before the 4.0 patch, you should aim for around 130 (max) spell pen rating if I remember correctly. Since most of your abilities are physical rather than spells, being a bit shy of that should be ok as well so long as you're ok with the rare Strangulate or other spell resist.

Other than that, you should be gemming for strength.
http://www.arenajunkies.com/showthread.php?t=172752
4 gems + Back enchant = 135

No more, no less.
but at lvl 85 = fail
130+ spell pen. 4 gems/cloak enchant. Don't ask why, just do it.

This... for Unholy too.
At 85 and beyond you'll want 195 spell penetration. You can go over that but don't go under it.

Cloak enchant + 1 normal gem + 1 JC gem does the trick.
Very informative and thanks for the link all.

Where do I get some pvp macros?

I was never one to understand macros and usually just borrowed them from people.

Anyone know a site where I can get some pvp macros? Like using death pact and then raise dead in a single button or lichborne/deathcoil heal.

Thanks broskies
Try some of these;

Skip newbie area ?

Came back playing after a long break, started playing around with the mobile app and realized my mule is too low level to show up in the armory. I mostly want to use it for the auction house.

Anyway, rather than waste time leveling to 10 I figured I could use a death knight. Can I skip the newbie area and head right to a major city ? Would also rather not waste time doing those quests just for a mule.

No.
Maybe join a group with a warlock and have them summon you...? I dunno, that'd be like defying gravity to me.
Even a warlock summon won't work. You'll have to play through the whole starting area to 58.
It's honestly worth it though. It's a fun questline, and the perks of having a 58 mule/farming toon with a free mount outweigh having a level 10 mule.
Bummer ... thanks :)

2 hours doing the starter quests, or 2 hours getting a mule to level 10 (if that), take your pick.

It hardly takes 2 hours for the starting quests honestly. If you've done 'em before, you can finish em in like 50 minutes.

Meta Gem bonus issue

So I messed around with gems to get the meta bonus but now I have crappy sockets and I don't have the bonus either.

I have 4 orange right now 3 blue and 1 purple. Don't ask me how I got that combo anyways

I have 2 yellow sockets 2 red and 3 blue as well as 1 prisimatic check my armory if you like

I'm going to pick up the justice points legs soon which add another blue and yellow socket giving me.

4 blue 3 yellow 2 red and 1 prisamatic.

If anyone would care to explain exactly how this all works I'd appreciated, or advice how to get the meta bonus with sacrificing the least amount of stats.
4 orange = 4 red
3 blue = 3 blue
1 purple = 1 blue and 1 red

5 red, 4 blue = less blue than red

Am I doing this right?

So I'm a frost dw death knight. Working on getting better weps I'm hit caped and geming for strength, and reforging into more expertise. What's the cap for frost dw expertise? And am I doing what I should be?

Spending Conquest Points

What should I buy first?

All of my gear could be improved really, but should I save for the weapon first? Or get something else?

Tips and opinions pvp

I was just curious as too see what other players advice would be on for my stats and gear, i know im not completely geared, but would like to see where i stand with what i have right now. all tips and advice will be appreciated.

Nerfing Dks

ive had a dk since they came out and ever since they came out they are consistently bogged down by constant nerfs. I see mages and warlocks constantly topping meters yet it is very rare for a dk to. Well this is the case granted there may be the very good dk who knows his stuff and consistently is around the top deeps. But with nerfs like reducing DS by 10%, making the ghoul go from 100% to 80%, not to mention the spec related issues always dropping the percent from 15-30-45, to 15-20-25. Like serious. either balance it out better because casters consistently top meters, or let us have a time to shine. Granted you improved the tank spec alot. But for dks who are leet deeps at heart constant nerfing makes me wanna make a range. Oh and not to mention the numerous amount of fights that are melee-unfriendly. the 2nd last boss in stonecore. i hope you get my points. thank you
Your in World of Castercraft now B****!

Soloing Bug Trio

I've been soloing a bunch of old world/bc stuff in my downtime waiting for the xpac to come out. I've solo'd up thru fankriss in AQ40 with the exception of the trio. I've heard it is doable but I'm having problems interrupting the heal due to fears/knock backs. wondering if anyone has any tips

Mdps trinkets in Cataclysm

To all my fellow Mdps Death knights whether frost or unholy:
Here are the trinkets available in the Cataclysm (only blues and purples non HM stuff)

http://www.wowhead.com/compare?items=59224;59506;62049;59461;62469;58180;52351;52351;55868;55814;56132;55251;66994

I feel very underpowered

Whenever I come face to face with Horde I'm taken down in seconds, it doesn't matter if I pop CD's or anything, they always manage to snare, stun and just nuke the hell out of me and I'm dead within seven seconds, almost every other class.

It seems like the only other class I can kill are Death Knights.

Is it me? Or am I missing something? Can I get some tips?
1. You're doing it wrong.
2. Level 85s with better gear are killing you.

It's probably number one though. IBF, AMS, Ghoul, AotD, MF, Strang, Dark Simul, Death Pact. You should be able to survive a hell of a long time with all those tools available.
Thing is usually I'm down to 1/2 my health before I can even do anything. I feel like I have to get the drop on them or do something underhanded to even have a chance.

Practice, practice, I suppose.
Don't forget that you have 0 resillience right now, so if anyone outgears u they have you most of the time (assuming equal skill). Wait a little, pvp season 9 starts today so get some resi and have fun not being destroyed. =D
Alright, so there's hope. :p
Anyway, what do you guys think about bleeds/DoTs right now, I think those were one of my primary concerns... Rogues/Ferals/Locks seem nasty.
So is this against one person or more than one? If it's more than one (like in a battle ground where you decide to rush to the flag while the rest of alliance is #@@!!!@!*ing to justin beiber and the us hordies rush your ass) then yes, you will not, and should not, surviver more than 2 seconds.

If it's one vs one, you're doing something wrong AND your gear is bad.
Well, if you switch to unholy, you could spec into lichborne and magic supression to help survive a little longer. did this in Battle for Gilneas several times. ran into 5 horde which then proceeded to focus me. got pretty low, popped ams+lichborne healed to full while my team took care of the rest. It's funny to see the other team break off and start searching for my healer to kill, not realizing it's just me.

Unholy Reforging: Haste > Crit

Should I sacrifice some of the crit on my gear for haste?
Yes and it shouldn't be some. Reforge as much as you can as long as you're hit capped.
Hit > Haste > Crit > Str >Mastery > Exper. Around 30% haste mastery and expertise swap spots but think that is the priority list as of last EJ post.
I have 23 expertise at the moment. About how much am I safe sacrificing?
All of it. Do not worry about Expertise at all until you softcap Haste.
Most of my DPS pieces already have haste on them.

What's the soft cap again? :S
There is no set soft cap, it simply goes down in value. Having a proc weapon will make it more valuable, but pretty much over 30% it goes down in value, as you end up sitting on runes with runic empowerment procs.

No way is Crit > Str. Not even Haste.

Hit>Str>Haste>Crit friends. Yes reforge Crit to Haste.
this should go for all item enhancements

Hit (to cap)>Str>Haste>Crit>Mastery>Exper (to cap)>Ap>Agi
Haste is the new Armor Pen. Stack as much as you can, I only wish my rune regeneration was always on the same level of sheer awesomeness as when heroism+frenzy are up together.
Haste seems like a caster stat since I', used to stacking it on my shammy. Just gotta get used to it I guess.
Haste is the bomb. I love it but when I swap to tank it feels sooooo slooooow!

Machine Gun > Tank :P
If your Hit is above 8% [like mine was 15%] then reforge excess hit into haste and crit. Hit above 8% is useless, but you can always use the Haste! If you hover your mouse over the stat on your Character box it will tell you for hit [0% chance miss a lvl ?? boss]. So when you reforge you can check after every piece to make sure you didn't take away too much Hit. Keep the Crit!

Haste has been good for DKs for quite a while.

The crit should be reforged regardless.
Reforginig Crit to Haste, was a slight dps lost for me in short mob fights, generaly any 5 man, boss or mob. But a huge boost in all ICC fights, mobs or bosses, not as much a boost for mobs, but who cares about mobs, is the bosses that count..
