Can DKs tank fresh out of the gate?

Since heart strike cleaves now, it's probably not necessary to wait for DnD at level 60. The gear is pretty good and most of the quest gear you get right away won't be upgrades, so you should be able to tank as soon as you finish.

A couple of things, if you really want to tank out of the gate. Dual spec is only 10g now, so if you're Frost or Unholy, get a Blood off spec. No reason not to. This gives you Heart Strike for 3-mob pulls, and also a potentially boosted Blood Boil for 4+ mob pulls. Your Death Strike is fairly important. As Blood, it turns the Frost and Unholy you use into Death Runes. Set up correctly, it makes Heart Strike/Blood Boil very spammable.
I instance leveled my DK as a Blood tank right out of ebon hold with starting blue gear. You won't have any trouble with threat at all. Focus on strikes first to build threat, then put up disease if it's going to be a long fight and you have time. And make sure to keep your blood shield up...
You don't even really NEED to drop diseases, tbh. Save those Runes for Death Strikes.
Wow more good info. I didnt realize they lowered dual spec to 10g, that's awesome. I was expecting 1k!
